India’s cricketers may have finally got a break from the game but the media is still advising them on the do’s and don’ts, hair-dos, that is! The Times Now TV channel has even polled its viewers on which hair-do they consider most suitable for the country’s T20 and ODI cricket captain.
The options are the long, golden-dyed Dhoni hair, the long, naturally-coloured variety or the close-cropped look he is currently sporting. Times Now even remembered how General Musharraf was all praise for the long, golden-dyed look and replayed the TV footage where, at the end of the third ODI between India and Pakistan at Lahore on February 13, 2006, where Dhoni won the man-of-the-match award by smashing 72 off 46 balls, Pakistan’s President referred to a placard held by someone in the crowd, advising the wicket-keeper to have a haircut. Looking at Dhoni, Musharraf said, “
Do not have a haircut! You look good in this haircut!” Few knew the secret behind the look of the golden boy of Indian cricket. On the eve of an ODI against South Africa at Bangalore on November 19, 2005, a Times Network News correspondent took Dhoni to a hairstylist to have his hair dyed blonde. Dhoni sat patiently in the saloon for as long as it took to have each hair dyed blonde.
However, much water has flowed down the Ganges and Dhoni’s hair since then. That he has now opted for a close crop could perhaps indicate that India’s ODI skipper does not want too much additional pressure on his head at a time when he could already be feeling the weight of expectations of a billion fans.
If David Beckham continues to be a fashion statement with a hairstyle evolving from the Red Indian Mohican look (a fringe of hair running down the middle of the head) to a golden-dyed and braided hair-do, it could be because this is one way of remaining in the news when the best playing days are behind him. Whereas, the best is yet to be for both Dhoni and his hair!
